Holland Lighthouse "Big Red"
|
Holland Lighthouse, known as Big Red was built in 1907 and
is one of Holland’s premier landmarks. In 1936 an addition
of two stories was added to make it the four level facade
you now see. Two coal feed marine boilers produced the
steam to sound the ten inch locomotive whistle used as a
fog horn. In 1971 - 78 a “Save The Lighthouse” drive was
started to maintain the surplus facility. The original “Fresnel”
light is in the Holland Museum. The new light can be seen
from twenty mile off the coast.
You seldom visit an art gallery in the Holland area and do
not see a painting of Big Red. So far this year I have made
four visits to photograph this impressive red lighthouse. I
hope you enjoy these images of Big Red, and have an
opportunity to view it.
